Socialcast on Tuesday is launching a revision of its group communication service. Originally released in 2007, Tuesday’s update has a much cleaner and more contemporary interface, and liberally borrows features and ideas from social sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Friendfeed.

I was very impressed by the demo I got last week. Socialcast appears to have a solid, lightweight product for business communication that could help workers (along with customers and clients) keep up to date with each other, and could also reduce in-company e-mail spam.

The underlying principle of Socialcast is that users enter their status messages, questions, or ideas into a simple text box. Users can also link their accounts to other services, such as Delicious, or to RSS feeds and blogs. People who subscribe to those users can see those updates and can respond to them privately or in public.

As on Friendfeed, items that are discussed a lot stay on the top of the stack of items.

Sound familiar?

Socialcast is like Friendfeed, but with a business slant.

What makes Socialcast a business product more so than Friendfeed, Twitter, Facebook, Plurk, Jaiku, or what have you, is that it offers administrative controls appropriate for a workgroup app. Admins can hook the system into an enterprise directory service, and can make sure new people joining a workgroup are automatically subscribed to others in their company who matter to them.

The system also has different default item types than a general-purpose nanoblog or personal feed aggregator. You can enter your status, as you can with other services, or put items in the categories “ideas,” “questions,” “links,” and “worklog.” The last is especially useful to keep tabs on who’s doing what.

Socialcast will also let enterprise customers “white label” the product so it carries corporate branding, and there will be capabilities to include company-specific posting types linked to an internal system. For example, when signing a new customer, the service could link to a Salesforce.com record and pull information from it. Links to wikis and bug-tracking systems are also possible.

I believe this tool could do several good things for a company. Most importantly, it connects its users to the pulse of what’s happening in a company or workgroup, and still gives them the control to dial back on the onslaught of information if they wish, by un-following certain users.

It can also help capture business knowledge in a central location. And it can greatly reduce corporate spam.

I do have some reservations, though. There’s no client app for the service yet, for example, although I’m told an AIR app is forthcoming. I find that using a desktop app, Twhirl, to access Friendfeed and Twitter makes using the services much easier, and for Socialcast to really work, a persistent desktop experience (like on an e-mail app) will make a big difference.

The new small-business version of the application will cost $5 a month per user (after 30-day free trial). It’s a fair price, but there are no tiers of service (flat rates for groups of users), and I worry that businesses may be stingy with subscriptions and not sign up for as many user accounts as they could use. This pricing plan might also make it harder for end users to sign up people for their service who aren’t in the company proper–customers and clients, for example.

And speaking of external users, I’m not sure how the product manages security, so some feeds stay closed off to non-company users.

For Socialcast to add value to a company, it has to be used. Fortunately, it appears to be easy, even fun, to get into and use the app. I would be delighted to see CNET adopt the product. I think it could help us, and most other businesses too.

Oracle announced Tuesday it plans to acquire applications management software maker ClearApp.

The acquisition, which is expected to close by the end of the year, aims to enhance Oracle’s line-up of Enterprise Manager products. ClearApp’s technology is designed to allow customers to manage applications built on service-oriented architecture (SOA) platforms.

ClearApp’s software aims to provide a greater view into a company’s business services spread across all related application components.

“As customers deploy more SOA-based applications, the task of effectively managing them becomes paramount,” Leng Leng Tan, Oracle vice president of Applications and Systems Management, said in a statement.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Google is introducing video into Google Apps with the hope that companies will be attracted to a service that helps with training and internal communication but also removes the hassles of hosting video.

According to Google executives who spoke to CNET News last week, the search giant has tailored some of the technology developed by YouTube specifically for corporate clients. The offering is part of Google’s continuing efforts to replace traditional office software with so-called cloud-computing services.

With the help of Google Video for Business, a company’s employees can upload and share clips with the same ease as posting a clip to YouTube, according to Matt Glotzbach, Google’s product manager director.

“Think of this as user-generated video for businesses,” Glotzbach said.

A demo video provided to reporters illustrated the ways that Google employees use the service, which goes live to the public on Tuesday.

One Google executive said during the demo that instead of distributing an e-mail with a wrap-up of quarterly results to his team, he posted a clip of himself discussing the quarter. It was more personable than just sending an e-mail “especially for Google employees that work in remote offices” the video’s narrator said.

The coolest feature by far is the Scene Browser, which presents a series of thumbnails that a user can click on to locate a specific segment within a video. It’s slick and one has to wonder why it isn’t offered on YouTube. Glotzbach said he didn’t know for certain but speculated that it might be because YouTube’s clips are generally shorter in length.

Some of the service’s other features enable administrators to track usage, and employees can leave comments, insert tags, and embed a video into any Web page. Companies control who sees the video because only authorized users are able to watch.

The service will be wrapped inside the Google Apps Premier Edition which costs $50 a year per user. For that price, each user receives all the Google Apps, such as Gmail, Docs, and Calendar.

Glotzbach said Google has an opportunity to cash in on corporate video, a segment that many predicted would one day be huge but has been too complicated and costly for wide adoption. For Gmail, the company offers 25GB per mailbox. For Google Video, the company offers 3GB per user.

Google is hoping that companies will flock to a service that doesn’t require them to host servers or worry about huge amounts of data. This is a bottom’s up approach, according to Glotzbach. It used to be that companies were willing only to pay for high-level executives to make videos for internal communication, but Google Video for Business enables a company to allow employees at any level to distribute video content.

Google wants to help you put a name to that face.

With a face recognition feature set to launch at noon PDT Tuesday, Google’s Picasa Web Albums will help users label their photos with the names of subjects. That and other changes to the photo-sharing site are joined by a new beta version of the accompanying Picasa 3.0 photo-editing software.

The “name tag” feature presents users with collections of photos with what it judges to be the same person, then lets them click a button to affix a name. Once photographic subjects are named, users can browse an album of that individual on the fly.

“Once you’ve started naming people, we’ll start suggesting names for you based on similarity,” said Mike Horowitz, Google’s Picasa product manager. “The process of naming people is really addictive and tremendously fun.”

Having tried the new service on dozens of photos, I wouldn’t go that far. But it is a major advance in what I believe is a very important area, photo metadata.

Tagging is a powerful way to sort digital photographs. Photo albums are useful, but with rich tagging, people also can slice and dice their photo collection to show particular people, activities, or locations. Even with face recognition technology or other computer processing, the textual tags in photos are a far more reliable way for computers to understand image content.

And tags become even more powerful as photos are assembled into publicly accessible collections such as those at Yahoo’s Flickr, Picasa, or Fox Interactive’s Photobucket.

The problem with tagging is that it’s a chore, so most people don’t bother. But Picasa’s name tag feature automates the process enough–and provides enough reason to use it–that I believe many users will take the tagging plunge.

It took me less than 15 minutes to tag close to 200 faces in a set of more than 100 photos, and that included some start-up time such as figuring out how the system worked, establishing names for various common subjects, and correcting a few errors. The most impressive moments are when Picasa presents a large array of photos with the same face, and you can label them all with a single click.

I speak here from experience. I do tag my own photos–for example the 700 I took on a weeklong backpacking trip earlier this month–and something like Google’s facial recognition assisting would have dramatically sped the process. It wouldn’t help with other tags such as “swimming,” “waterfall,” or “Sierra tiger lily,” but let’s face it–people are the central feature in most people’s photos.

Overall, Google’s Picasa moves show that despite a long period of near-dormancy, Google still evidently is committed to the photography site and software.

However, Picasa overall still feels like a staid place to store photos, share them with friends, and maybe order prints. It doesn’t match the vibrant community of Yahoo’s Flickr. And though Flickr also has been slow to change, Yahoo has at least been nudging it in the right direction with additions such as online editing.

Face recognition blemishes
Picasa’s name tags are helpful but imperfect. The feature failed to find faces in several photos where I thought the faces were reasonably obvious. It also thought my bicycle wheel’s spokes and wife’s ear were faces. One excusable error: it thought a mask in a mural was a face, though for some reason it didn’t bother with a couple of real humans in the same mural.

“Our face-matching technology works best when a person is looking at the camera,” Horowitz said. “There are a variety of factors that may limit our success in matching faces, including profile views and challenging lighting conditions like shadows.”

The most annoying error was that during the initial period when I was adding names to the system, it somehow came up with three separate versions of me and two versions of my son, despite the fact that I entered the same name and e-mail address. I fixed it by telling Picasa my alter egos were erroneously labeled, at which point they re-entered the labeling pool and I assigned them to the remaining identity. Too bad I didn’t notice the “merge” option until later.

Knowing the privacy implications of face recognition, Google is proceeding somewhat cautiously. Picasa users must specifically enable the name tag feature, and default name tags aren’t shared publicly. Picasa users may only tag photos in their own account.

With the “name tag” feature, which users must specifically enable, Picasa presents groups of images sharing the same face. Users can label them with a person’s name. Eventually users can click a tag to find shots of a particular subject in their photo collections,

The face recognition technology came to Google via its 2006 acquisition of Neven Vision, Horowitz said.

There are other changes coming to Picasa Web Albums (though a change to Google Photos isn’t one of them, at least right now). One is an “explore” view that lets people browse the total collection of public Picasa photos. It lets people browse by popular tags, location, and peer at recent uploads. Another is the ability to e-mail photos to the service.

Google also plans to release a beta version of the Picasa 3 image-editing. It works on Windows, though a Google Labs version has been transmogrified to work on Linux via the Wine software layer. Horowitz wouldn’t confirm whether a Mac OS X version is anything more than an idea: “Macs are important to us,” he said. “We’re always looking for new ways making sure our users are happy, so it’s something we’re looking at.”

The new Picasa software brings several changes:

• A movie maker mode lets people combine photos with music to export movie versions of galleries to watch on a PC or upload to YouTube.

• A new retouch brush lets people edit out skin blemishes and other trouble spots. And the tool can automatically fix red-eye problems caused by flash photography.

• A new collage mode lets users compile many photos into one composite image. This time, users get precise control over image placement for example by moving, rotating, and resizing photos, and the software can produce a high-resolution composite for poster-size prints.

• A photo viewer for quick slideshows, an option that during installation politely asks to own the file associations for JPEG, TIFF, raw images from higher-end cameras, and some other formats. The slideshow software can view PNG files, which is handy, but the editing software still can’t, which is a significant limitation for me.

• Online synchronization. If photos have been uploaded from Picasa to the Web site, they can be edited later and the changes, including tags, are synchronized to the Web site. This is very handy since you might want to get images up quickly to share with friends then edit them later. Unfortunately, changes on the Web site aren’t mirrored back to the PC, so all those name tags will stay put in the cloud for now.

Update at 2:36 p.m. PDT: It’s official: Google Chrome will be available Tuesday.

Word surfaced Monday of a Web “comic book” introducing Google Chrome, the search giant’s long-rumored open-source browser project. While the illustrations, created by cartoonist Scott McCloud, were not announced by Google, they do contain the quotes and likenesses of 19 Google developers.

The detailed, 38-page comic appeared on Google Blogoscoped, an unofficial Google blog. Update: The comic is now available on Google Book Search. The book is broken down into five main sections covering stability; speed; search and the user experience, security, and standards. Here are the key features, according to the book:

Stability
Each tab will run in its own process. These processes will be completely isolated from each other, will be killable from the operating system’s process manager, and will be sandboxed to prevent them from accessing information on the user’s computer. This architecture should lead to a more stable and more consistent browsing experience–performance of the browser should not degrade over time.

Google is using its search index to prioritize testing of the browser–the pages that are linked to the most from Google Search are getting the most automated hits to make sure Chrome is behaving correctly on them.

Speed
The browser is being written with WebKit, the open-source engine at the core of Apple’s Safari and Google’s Android. The browser is also getting a new Javascript virtual machine, V8. It’s said to be a better solution for complex and rich Web applications–it should yield better performance as well as “smoother drag and drops” in interactive applications.

Search and user experience
In Chrome, browser tabs will take over the interface, becoming the primary navigational element. Each tab will get its own window controls. Users will be able to tear off tabs into standalone windows. (Related: developers will be able to control which window controls appear in a tab, creating, if they wish, Web applications that are embedded in a browser but that appear to be more like traditional desktop apps.)

Chrome’s URL entry field will be called the “Omnibox,” and, like Mozilla’s “Awesome bar,” will feed you suggestions based on your browsing history and live search results. It will be respectful of users, the comic says: “Inline completions will never flicker, never flash. It’s perfect, aesthetically non-distracting.”

Chrome will integrate URL entry and search queries into the Omnibox.

The browser’s default start page will show thumbnails of the user’s most frequently visited pages and a list of their top searches. There will also be a private browsing mode, as IE 8 has.

Security
Chrome’s architecture lends itself to secure browsing. Each Web page, or tab, runs in its own process, and is blocked from accessing other processes on the computer. “We’ve taking the existing process boundary,” the comic says, “and made it into a jail.” Different and more flexible permissions are being developed for plug-ins, however.

A database and API to access phishing and scam sites will be used in Chrome (and made public), which will hopefully reduce “zero-day” scam exploits. The browser will be constantly updated with this information.

Standards
The browser will be released as an open-source project. Also, Google will build the open-source local runtime Gears into the browser, and is hoping that it is taking up widely to “improve the base functionality of all browsers.”

Yes, this is big
CNET News.com Editor in Chief Dan Farber’s analysis of Google Chrome Monday was this: “It would be in line with other Google open-source projects, such as OpenSocial and Google Gears. Creating a competitor to Firefox, as well as Internet Explorer and Opera, could spur more innovation.”

“Open sourcing the code is a smart way to avoid the ‘Google wants to take over the world’ fear, but it seems that Google has ambitions to create a comprehensive Internet operating system, including a browser, applications, middleware and cloud infrastructure.”

No official confirmation from Google yet, although Kara Swisher of All Things D cites sources who say that Google will make a Chrome download available to users by as early as tomorrow.
