Businesses are turning to Linux en masse as they face massive budget cuts driven by the economic crisis, according to a new report.

When the global economic crisis unfolded last year, Linux advocates were quick to predict the rise of their favorite operating system.

However, these arguments were met by seemingly logical counter-arguments that foresaw otherwise. One of them even went as far as predicting the downfall of open-source projects.

Well, contrasting forecasts like these can be treated in equal footing until the numbers finally come out.

This month, some numbers finally came out and have been basically favouring Linux.

In a recent global survey conducted by IDC (but sponsored by Linux vendor Novell), results have revealed how IT decision makers feel about a Linux adoption in their organizations in the midst of the global recession. A white paper entitled “Linux Adoption in A Global Recession” summarized the results of the survey.

A glimpse of the white paper’s introduction reveals a clear indication of what most CIO’s, IT Directors, IT Managers, IT Staff, IT Consultants and the like, who were the usual respondents of the survey, thought of the adoptation concept. The introduction states:

“Economic downturns have a tendency to accelerate emerging technologies, boost the adoption of effective solutions, and punish solutions that are not cost competitive or that are out of synch with industry trends.

“IDC research finds that Linux users are clearly satisfied about their choice to deploy Linux, and during trying economic times, the potential for those same customers to ramp up their deployment of Linux is strong”

Among the 330 organizations surveyed, those from Asia Pacific appeared the most aggressive in increasing Linux adoption. Of the 134 respondents coming from the region, 73% expressed interest in increasing adoption on server deployments and 70% expressed interest in increasing adoption on clients.

For comparison, 53% of the total number of respondents expressed interest in increasing adoption on server deployments and 48% expressed interest in increasing adoption on client deployments.

This interest in Linux adoption, according to IDC, stems from the fact that while most organizations aim to reduce spending because of the the economic downturn, they don’t have the intention of implementing a directly proportonal reduction in deployments. In order to achieve this, they turn to Linux and its low-cost nature.

The respondents also indicated that the top 2 reasons that would enable them to accelerate new deployments of Linux would be cost reduction and stronger interoperability with Windows and other operating systems.

This raises the interesting question: Will Microsoft try to stick to its guns and promote the value of its product and service ecosystem against ‘free’ Linux in tough times, or will it discount to retain market share, as it has done with Windows on netbooks?

Despite all of its successes during the global recession as revealed by the research, the study did not fail to recognize the fact that Windows stood in the way of Linux’s long-term growth potential; i.e., beyond the economic crisis.

In fact, Windows is still identified as the platform holding the majority position on both PCs and the x86 server hardware, one of the architectures where Linux has strongly benefited due to the crisis.bull

There’s no doubt the battered economy is affecting technology bellwether Cisco Systems, but the company is looking to the future with plans for big investments across its portfolio in “adjacent markets.”

On Tuesday, Cisco reported that earnings for its fourth fiscal quarter 2008 were up 4.4 percent to $2.0 billion on revenue that climbed 9.9 percent to $10.36 billion. The results were in line with analyst expectations, but were a far cry from the company’s results during some of its best quarters when the economy was strong and healthy.

As for the future, Cisco’s CEO John Chambers said he expects Cisco to continue to be affected by the downturn in the economy, and he projected sales would grow by about 8 percent in the first fiscal quarter and by about 8.5 percent in the second fiscal quarter.

He declined to give guidance for the second half of the fiscal year, because he said the economic outlook is likely to change in the next six months. Still, Chambers reaffirmed his long-term guidance for the company of growth between 12 percent to 17 percent a year.

While the company waits for the economy to turn around, Cisco is preparing to make heavy investments in new markets to prepare itself for when customers begin spending again.

This means that the company will invest in new markets that are adjacent to existing product lines in all its major customer segments from the home network to the data center, from small and medium businesses to the enterprise, and from its commercial businesses to the service provider market, Chambers said.

“We’ll partner big to big, and acquire big to small, or big to medium,” he said. “So you could see us partner with an IBM or a Microsoft or an Intel. And we’ll acquire more like a Scientific Atlanta or a WebEx. My favorite kind of company to acquire is one with 100 engineers who have a hot product they are just about to release.”

Cisco has weathered several economic downturns in the past. And in the past when times have been tough, Cisco has ramped up investments in new markets to fuel growth for the future. So far the company has executed this strategy extremely well, spawning several new revenue streams that have gone on to become revenue generators. For example, Cisco’s unified communications business and its IP telephony businesses were areas where Cisco invested during previous downturns. And today these businesses are paying off generating a significant amount of revenue.

This time around, Chambers says he already sees the next technological wave.

“Web 2.0 and collaboration will be the biggest drivers for our business over the next five to 10 years,” he said.

Got dial-up and don’t want to give it up? You’re not alone.

An estimated 10 percent of Americans are surfing the net via dial-up connections, according to a report released Wednesday by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

And a lot of those people apparently see no compelling reason to change. The report indicates that those users are not itching to make a change to a speedier broadband connection in large part because, they say, broadband is too expensive.

Of this dial-up group, 35 percent cited the cost issue, while 19 percent say nothing will ever prompt them to change. Another subset–14 percent–say they’re still on dial-up because broadband is not available in their neighborhoods

The Associated Press, in its posting on the report, cited this assessment by the report’s author, John Horrigan: “That (resistance to change) suggests that solving the supply problem where there are availability gaps is only going to go so far.”

The survey collected information from 2,251 U.S. residents, between April 8 and May 11.

Earlier this week, AOL said it would be raising the subscription fee for its dial-up service by 20 percent, starting at the end of July.

A fresh look at Yahoo’s search results Thursday by Hitwise Intelligence raises the question of whether Yahoo could survive just fine without its search engine.

Such a question is rather important to Yahoo investors, given the Internet search pioneer has given a cold shoulder to Microsoft, which has previously expressed interest in buying Yahoo’s search assets. Yahoo, however, rebuffed the offer, noting in its investor presentation that selling its search assets, including its algorithmic search, would:

Jeopardize the Yahoo user experience and make it difficult for Yahoo to maintain search and display volume.

But Heather Hopkins, vice president of research for Hitwise, noted in her blog that Yahoo’s valuable sites would not necessarily fair poorly without Yahoo’s search engine.

Hopkins took Yahoo’s top 20 U.S. Internet properties for the month of June and ranked them, based on user traffic.

As expected, Yahoo Mail represented a 37.5 percent slice of the traffic pie, followed by the main Yahoo site with 30.6 percent and Yahoo search with 12.l percent.

Then Hopkins compared whether these top 20 sites were getting their users by way of a Google search or a Yahoo search. In all but six of the top 20 sites, more users were coming to Yahoo’s top 20 sites by way of a Google search–even to its popular Yahoo Mail and Yahoo.com.

Yahoo Answers showed the disparity the most, with 49 percent of its U.S. traffic coming from Google in June, while only 20 percent was from a Yahoo search.

Hopkins made this observation in her blog:

I’ll admit, I went into this analysis thinking that the data would show that Yahoo was worth more together–I thought that the sum of the whole would be greater than the parts. However after looking more closely at the data, I’m not sure that is necessarily true.

Whether Yahoo is better kept whole or split up I can’t say. What I can say is that the parts of Yahoo are quite valuable and wouldn’t necessarily be lost without the search engine.

Wonder if Yahoo has read Hopkins’ blog?

A chemical used to make LCD televisions and semiconductors could cause more global warming than coal-fired power plants, a report warns.

Nitrogen trifluoride is a “missing greenhouse gas,” according to a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters on June 26. It’s used in chemical vapor deposition for making liquid crystal displays, semiconductors, and synthetic diamonds.

Production of the chemical could double to 8,000 metric tons in 2009, atmospheric chemist Michael Prather, who co-wrote the report, told New Scientist.

Nitrogen trifluoride’s globe-warming effect reportedly could be 17,000 times stronger than that of carbon dioxide.

However, the picture is incomplete because nitrogen trifluoride isn’t among the six gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol international climate change agreement.

This year alone, its production would release the equivalent of the global-warming emissions from Austria, totaling some 67 million metric tons, New Scientist noted.

And that would amount to more global-warming pollution than all the industrialized world’s emissions of perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and of sulfur hexafluoride, which is considered more potent.

Kyoto’s terms left out nitrogen trifluoride and some dozen other gases, in part because they weren’t produced at a scale large enough to cause significant harm.

Some companies had turned to the man-made chemical initially to reduce pollution.

The market for flat-screen televisions, including LCDs, is expected to boom with the United States’ full transition to digital television next February.

Along with it, watchdog groups warn that additional ecological harm could come, if toxic electronics waste isn’t disposed of properly. Americans are expected to discard 80 million analog TVs by the end of 2009.

However, LCD televisions are often painted as eco-friendly because they consume less power than plasma and rear-projection sets.
